Kabale police have arrested one person in connection with the brutal assault of 14-year-old Ramathani Obama, whose injuries resulted in the amputation of both legs.
Obama, the son of Ramathani Tibanyendera, a resident of Rushambya village in Kirigime Ward, Southern Division, Kabale Municipality, was attacked by neighbors in late December 2024 on allegations of theft.
He was left unconscious in a bush until July 1, 2025, when a good Samaritan discovered him and alerted his family. Tibanyendera rushed his son to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital and filed a report with the Kabale police station. According to Tibanyendera, after regaining consciousness, Obama identified his assailants as neighbors who had accused him of theft.
Medical professionals at the hospital determined that both of Obama’s legs had begun to decay, posing a severe health risk. As a result, they performed an amputation last week to prevent complications like infections or the potential development of cancer. The amputation has left the boy's father distraught and demanding justice for his son.
Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed the arrest of one suspect, whose identity is being withheld to avoid compromising ongoing investigations. Maate added that efforts are underway to apprehend other suspects linked to the assault. The arrested individuals face charges of attempted murder.
Tibanyendera has called on authorities to expedite investigations and hold the perpetrators accountable for the life-altering harm inflicted on his son.
