At least ten people were killed during festivities ushering in the New Year. Police have described it as the most peaceful celebration ever.

Addressing journalists on Monday at Central Police Station, Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson Ibn Ssenkumbi said though there had been bomb threats the festivities had passed without any major incident.

Ssenkumbi says four people died in accidents involving boda boda riders, while there were five murders where three members of one family were killed in Wakiso, and one girl was electrocuted in Kabalagala. Another person died under unclear circumstances.

On December 31st, Singh Moringa, an Indian national was found dead in Bukoto flats. His houseboy Simon Kasiba reported to Kiira road police.

Another unidentified person died on the way to Mulago hospital after his hand was reportedly cut off by Yusuf Wantega, a local guard who was guarding at Zam Zam Motors Uganda Limited on Rubaga road.

On the same night a family of three including Pius Mpuuga 43, Elizabeth Nakabuye 22 and their two year old daughter Diana Nabayiga were slaughtered in Gimbo village in Wakiso district. Ssenkumbi says police brought sniffer dogs but could not make any headway as the assailants might have used a motor vehicle or motorcycle to get away. Ssenkumbi, however, said police were following important leads in the incident.

Ssenkumbi cites another incident where pump attendants at Benzina petrol station arrested one Derrick Lube after he entered the petrol station and allegedly tried to light a fire near a pump.  They handed him over to police and police recovered a matchbox from him.

In Ndejje, a police constable shot and injured two people who were part of the group that had a lit a vehicle tyre to welcome the New Year.

Sam Ogwang short Evelyn Amuge in the thigh and Emmanuel Kateregga was shot in the hand.

Ogwal has since fled to an unknown destination but Ssenkumbi said he would be charged with attempted murder when arrested.
