Tension as Thugs Attempt to Burn 11 Families in Luwero Town

Police in Luwero town is hunting for thugs who attempted to set 11 families on fire and dropped leaflets leaving the occupants in panic.

The affected families include of Denis Ssenoga, Mike Tusubira, Robert Ssemwanya , Musa Kato and Ben Ssebatuusa. Others are the families of Juliet Nabukenya, Beatrice Nakalanzi, and Emmanuel Magambo among others all residents of Kizito zone in Luwero town council.

Yusuf Kalyango the Chairperson LC 1 of Kizito zone says that the arson attacks occurred between 1-4am in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

Kalyango says that unidentified thugs poured fuel on the separate houses before setting them on fire. He adds that fortunately each detected the fire early and put it off before it spread to the entire house.

Kalyango said the thugs also pinned leaflets on houses accusing the occupants of hosting two bad persons but the names listed are not known in the area.

Beatrice Nakalanzi an affected resident said that she smelt fuel inside the house at around 1am and thought it was from the motorcycle which is kept at the neighborhood.

Nakalanzi adds that  few minutes later, she saw fire flames before she jumped out together with her child and they put it out with water.

Nakalanzi says that on jumping outside she found a man standing in the compound watching as the other houses burnt and he took off.

Robert Ssemwanya, another resident says that the thugs attacked him at around 4;00am but he also detected the fire early and put it off before it caused much damage.

But Denis Ssenoga another affected resident says that they noticed that someone attempted to burn them in the morning after finding fuel littered in the sitting room and the curtain burnt.

Residents have since asked Police to intensify patrols in the area to arrest the people who could be behind the planned attacks.

Felix Mugizi the Luwero District Police Commander says that the detectives have visited the affected families and recorded the statements from them.

Mugizi adds that Police are going to intensify enforcement of curfew guidelines and those arrested will be prosecuted for the crimes.

Two weeks ago a leaflet was dropped in Zirobwe town council threatening to attack the residents. Police say the man behind the leaflet was arrested.
