Tension High in Nakapiripirit Following Death of Teenager

UPDF and police engaged in running battles with the residents who wanted to avenge Tule’s death. Police had to fire live bullets to calm the situation that left several people with minor injuries.

Gunfire rocked Nakapiritpirit town Council Monday night as Uganda People Defense Forces-UPDF and Police battled residents protesting the death of one of their own in a suspected act of murder.

Security was called in after angry natives rampaged protesting the death of a teenager identified as Tule and started looting property belonging to members of the Bagisu business community.  

Tule is suspected to have been killed by one of the businessmen from Bagisu community for alleged theft of a pig.

The body of Tule, who was reported missing since Saturday was discovered on Monday evening in a flooded pit near Nakapiripirit Town Council Hall triggering protest from the natives.

Our reporter, Yosam Onyang says property and merchandise worth an unspecified amount of money was vandalized by the locals as they targeted the Bagisu.    

He says tension is still high and security forces have maintained heavy presence in Nakapiripirit town council.

The Nakapiritpirit Resident District Commissioner, David Modo declined to comment when contacted by URN, saying he was still chairing a security meeting to resolve the situation.
