Three people have been arrested after they staged an illegal roadblock on Christmas Day along Otuboi- Anyara Road in Kaberamaido District.
The three are detained at Otuboi Police Station. It's alleged that they were carrying a toy gun made out of wood.
Reports indicate that the masked machete gang of about seven people terrorized road users at around 10pm.
Judith Akello, Officer In-charge (OC) Otuboi Police Station confirmed to URN on Wednesday that the suspects in custody include; Denis Oniro, Faustine Eyotu and Robert Ajula all residents of Alur village in Ogwolo Sub County.
Akello explains that the suspects were arrested after Walter Ochen, a boda boda rider reported to Police about the presence of the thugs on the road. The thugs had robbed 5000 shillings from Ochen.
According to Akello, she dispatched a team of three police officers to the scene who also landed into the same road block but upon identifying themselves as police, the gang tried to run, but three were arrested.
Michael Okello, LCIII chairperson Anyara Sub County says these individuals camouflaged as the village security group and completely terrorized road users and also made threats of extreme violence as they robbed people.
“People were enjoying Christmas with total peace but suddenly at around 10pm we heard that some individuals formed a group that staged a certain road block to solicit money from other road users which is very criminal,” said Okello.
According to Okello, the gang reported picked over 30,000 shillings from various people who went and never bothered to alert the police.
Michael Odongo, East Kyoga police spokesperson however maintained that the rest of the region largely remained peaceful apart from fatal accident in Bukedea district that claimed two lives.
