Police in Lwengo district are holding three suspects including a witch doctor in connection to the gruesome murder of an elderly farmer on Monday night.  The gruesome incident occurred at Byanjiri village in Kito parish, Lwengo Rural sub-county. The suspects have been identified as Batesita Mutabazi, 36, Ashraf Kaiza, 20, and Nabona Nakibuule, a witch doctor, all residents of the same village.

The suspects reportedly attacked Ibrahim Ssebwana at his home and assaulted him severely. The actual motive of the attack is still unknown. According to Muhammad Nsubuga, the Masaka Region Police Spokesperson, Ssebwana died on the way to hospital after bleeding profusely.

He explains that Ssebwana managed to identify his attackers before he passed on. On the same day, the suspects went on to attack Paul Galiwango, 60, a fellow resident and another only identified as Mande, 30, of Nasiti village in Ndagwe sub-county from their respective home and hit them with blunt objects that left them unconscious.

Nsubuga says that Galiwango and Mande were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital where the doctors managed to save them.

He says that they are still-hunting for other assailants suspected to be members of organised criminal gangs that have been terrorizing residents.  John Bosco Matovu, the Byenjiri LC I Chairperson, says the two suspects are known for marijuana smoking and are capable of committing all sorts of crimes.

A post-mortem was done on Ssebwana’s body and the family members were allowed to proceed with the burial arrangements.  Police detectives say the suspects will be charged with murder and attempted murder after conclusive investigations.

Ssebwana’s death brings the number of murders in Lwengo to eight people in just four weeks. The deceased include two reservists -John Kabanda, 60, a resident of Bigando village and Vincent Kalya, 40, of Nzizi village, in Kkingo sub-county, who were killed in Ttagga village while on foot patrol on July 21, 2021.
