The Masaka District Traffic Officer, James Tebaijuka, has attributed the accident to reckless driving by the Subaru driver Luwalira who died on spot following the accident. He says that the Subaru car was carrying 4 people at the time of the accident but one of the women who was not indentified survived the accident and was rushed to hospital.

Three people have perished in an a road accident that has occurred on Masaka Mbarara highway in Masaka district.
The deceased have been identified as Robert Luwalira Kalumba, a son to Masaka businessman William Kalumba, Paul Nkusi and an unidentified female student of Mutesa 1 Royal University Masaka campus.
The accident occurred at Kyakumpi along Masaka Mbarara highway in Masaka town at about 2am last night when a Subaru car registration number UAU 932B that was travelling from Nyendo through the Kyakumpi highway to Masaka town collided with Fuso truck registration number UAT 634B from Mbarara to Kampala carrying matooke.
According to an eye witnesses the Subaru driver rammed into the fuso truck as he was joining the main road from Nyendo to Masaka town.

Tebaijuka says that the Fuso truck driver escaped after the accident adding that police has started a hunt for him to help police with investigations into the cause of the accident.
The deceased's bodies have been taken to Masaka referral hospital for postmortem as investigations into the cause of the accident goes on.
Tebaijuka has however warned road users against driving while drunk adding that police will not hesitate to arrest anyone who will be found drunk while driving.
