Three people have died and nine others
were injured in an accident which occurred in Migyera town council, along
Kampala-Gulu highway this morning.
The accident involved taxi registration number UAX 303F travelling from Masindi to Kampala. According to Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Isah Ssemwogerere, the taxi
lost control after a tyre burst and overturned killing the three people on the spot.
Ssemwogerere added that nine passengers have sustained injuries and were rushed to St
Francis Health centre for treatment
while the dead were transferred to Nakasongola Health Center IV. The deceased included two female adults and one juvenile whose identities had not been established by this afternoon.
Yesterday, the Traffic
Police Spokesperson Faridah Nampiima told the media
that the Police intend to work with the Uganda National Bureau of Standards to test
the quality of car tyres on the road after getting reports that some mechanics
were recycling old tyres, something that may be a cause of some
accidents.
She explained that the Police had registered a number of accidents caused
by tyre bursts last week in which 30 people sustained serious injuries. She was releasing a traffic report where a total of 411 accidents were
registered in one week across the country leaving 73 people dead out of 437
victims.
Some of the accidents occurred in the districts of
Mbarara, Nakasongola, Mubende, Budaka, Pakwachi and Mpigi in which taxis
were involved in tyre bursts and left scores injured.
