Two UPDF soldiers and a Local Defense Unit (LDU) personnel have been killed during a fierce gunfire exchange between the army and the Jie warriors at Loyoro Protected Kraal in Loyoro Sub County, Kaabong district.

A police officer attached to Kaabong Central Police Station who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to talk to the press told Uganda Radio Network on Wednesday that the warriors stole 168 cattle from the kraal. He said the incident occurred at around 11:00pm on Tuesday.

He said the warriors, suspected to be more than ten in number, took the soldiers who were guarding the kraal by surprise. He said the soldiers realized when they had already stolen the cattle and started firing at them.

The police officer said that some of the warriors were putting on army and police uniforms.

He said the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kaabong Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.

When contacted, Lt. Ceaser Olweny, the 5th Division Army Spokesperson confirmed the incident but said only two LDUs were killed and a UPDF soldier injured.

Olweny said the warriors went with more than 170 head of cattle and that they are headed towards Nakapelimoro near Kidepo National Game Park, on the Uganda-Kenya border.

He said the army is trailing them and also investigating the source of the military uniform that some of the warriors were wearing.
