Police in Rukungiri district have arrested a man in connection with an attempt to break into former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye's upcountry home located in Rwakabengo, Rukungiri Municipality.

The suspect identified as Andrew Ngabirano, a resident of Rukungiri Municipality, is held at Rukungiri police station. He was arrested after trespassing into the home at 6am today.

One of the people who stay at Besigye's Home told Uganda Radio Network on condition of anonymity that the suspect entered through the back fence and tried to break the back door but failed to gain entry. He later made attempts to break the front door of the same house.

"I had things break, I moved fast to know what was happening only to find the man breaking the door. I tried to catch him but he climbed up the water tank so I called in people and police to help me," the resident said.

He was however uncertain on the number of intruders.

Rukungiri District Police Commander Ronald Wotwali confirmed the attempted break-in but ruled out any connection to politics.  He says investigations are underway.
