Thugs Shoot Vanilla Guard Dead

Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori East Region Police Spokesperson, says Kaseru succumbed to gunshot wounds he sustained when he attempted to confront thugs who raided the vanilla garden he was guarding in the wee hours of Monday.
Thugs have raided a vanilla farm in Kasese district killing one person. 

Police have identified the deceased as 19-year-old Godfrey Kaseru, a resident of Kihudu village Muhinda Parish in Nyakiyumbu Sub County.

Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori East Region Police Spokesperson, says Kaseru succumbed to gunshot wounds he sustained when he attempted to confront thugs who raided the vanilla garden he was guarding in the wee hours of Monday.

Twesige told URN that the robbers fled the scene after realizing that residents had started making alarm. Police is investigating the attack vide CRB2019176.

Vanilla theft remains a huge challenge in Kasese district especially in Bukonzo East and West constituencies.

In 2018, more than ten people were killed either guarding their vanilla farms or attempting to steal vanilla. 

Vanilla has been a cash cow for farmers in the district since 2017, with a kilogram fetching between Shillings 150,000 and 250,000.
