Tension
is high at Busitema University main campus in Nangongera town council in Tororo
district because of insecurity. Reports from the university indicate that
unidentified thugs are terrorising students. The recent incident occurred on Saturday last week when the
thugs raped a second year student of Bachelors
in Science Education.
The
thugs reportedly intercepted the student who was moving from the handover party
of Teso Student Development Association –TESDA and gang raped her. Earlier on Thursday, the same gang reportedly
hacked another student who was on his way to the university from the hostel. On
Friday, the thugs hacked Martin Eleket, a third
year student of Science Education in Agriculture who was also heading to the
hostel.
Eleket
told URN that attacks by thugs have become the order of the day, adding that he
only managed to get away after tactfully pouring sand in the eyes of the
attackers who were armed with machetes. He says students now no longer go to
campus for revision for fear of being attacked, adding that some students may
be forced to abandon the university should the insecurity continue.
Early
this month, the thugs broke into the campus and stole 8 computers from the
computer Lab, picked the school TV from the dining room. Denis Muzamil Akibuni,
the acting Dean of Students Bustima Universit, says they are under fear because
of the escalation of insecurity.
He says
the university has started sensitising students to stop moving at night.
