The second batch of Uganda’s Olympic team is training in a bubble to protect the athletes from contracting COVID-19 as they prepare for the Olympic Games in Japan Tokyo.  This comes after two players in the first contingent to Tokyo tested positive for COVID-19, which saw the entire team quarantined.

The first batch of Uganda’s team including five athletes, three coaches and one official left the country for Japan on June 17th, 2021. Beatrice Ayikoru, the chief de mission to Tokyo at Uganda Olympics Committee, says the organizers are trying to do everything possible to protect the second batch of athletes from the dilemma that affected their colleagues.

She said the team is in a bubble camp in Kapchorwa, which is only accessible by the coaches and athletes. Bubble in spots means an area where teams stay isolated from the general public. Ayikoru also said UOC is conducting COVID-19 testing for the players at least twice a week.

According to Ayikoru, the last group of athletes will comprise long-distance runners such as Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo and Olympic medalist Steven Cheptegei.

The first batch of Uganda’s Olympians is currently under quarantine in Izumisano City of Japan. Over 26 athletes in the country qualified for the Olympic Games in different sports disciplines such as boxing, athletics, rowing, swimming and weightlifting.
