Top Pader NRM Officials in Trouble for Theft of Party Funds

Lowila says the NRM National Secretariat tasked her to recover the embezzled funds during a party executive meeting on Monday evening, where she managed to recover 70.5 Million shillings.

Top Pader District NRM party officials are in trouble for swindling more than 70 million Shillings meant for grassroots mobilisation and the party registers display exercise last Friday.

Some of the implicated officials include George Oyat Obwoya, the Pader district NRM party chairperson and his administrative secretary Ceaser Odiya. The others are unnamed NRM party sub county Chairpersons.

Okettayot Lowila, the Pader Woman Member of Parliament says the NRM National Secretariat disbursed 188.6 million Shillings to the district party officials on Friday to be distributed to 650 Villages and sub counties in the district. 

According to Lowila, each Sub County and village was entitled to Shillings 26.1 Million and 250,000 Shillings respectively. She however, says the top party officials only disbursed between 20,000 and 120,000 Shillings to the villages and Sub counties and pocketed the bulk of the funds.

Romeo Onek Ojara, the Pader District Police Commander says Oyat and Odiya were summoned to record statement on Monday following widespread public outcry that they had swindled funds meant for grassroots elections.

Odiya could not be reached on phone for comment. He told Police he withheld part of the money to save funds to finance future party activities in the district.

George Oyat Obwoya, the Pader District NRM Party Chairperson denies any wrong doing. He says it was the sole responsibility of the administrative Secretary to plan and direct all financial operations in the district.

Oyat says although the intention of the administrative Secretary was good for the party, he was never authorised to divert the money. 

He says during the Monday meeting, party Executives suspended the administrative secretary from office pending the conclusion of the investigations.
