Tororo general hospital administration was on Monday thrown into panic following a strike by cleaners over non-payment of their wages for the last two months.

The cleaners pitched camp near the mango tree in front of the administration block after laying down their tools.

Frustrated after spending the festive season without any pay, they demanded to be paid in order to go back to work

Attempts by the tenderer Janet Namusaga to woe back the disgruntled workers met little success as the filthy stench from the wards and compound with dozens of flies hovering over the hospital welcomed both visitors and patients to the life saving institution.

The disappointed cleaners who spent their Christmas season without any penny also complained of exploitation by the tenderer who pays them only 1,500 shillings per day.

Our reporter established that each cleaner who works in the ward is paid 45,000 shillings and those working outside earn only 40,000 per month yet the tenderer is being paid 3 million shillings every month.

When contacted for comment, Namusaga, the tenderer, referred this reporter to the hospital administration.

However the hospital administrator James Ojwang was forced to convene a closed door meeting with the workers at the board room where he pleaded with workers to save the institution from embarrassment after assuring them that their problem is going to be sorted out within the next two days.

The workers temporally returned on duty a waiting for the fulfilment of the promise within the agreed three days.

Ojwang said that he had spoken to the hospital senior administrator Mr. Amos Oboke at the district headquarters over the same matter and had been assured that the problem would be addressed.

Attempts to reach medical superintendent Dr Tom Ochar were futile as all his phones were switched off because he was part of the interview panels conducting interviews for medical workers at the district headquarters.
