Tough Test Awaits Kasirye In Uganda International Open

Uganda's top badminton player Brian Kasirye will face a tough task when he battles through the men's qualifiers for the 2019 Uganda International Championship.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) sanctioned Championship will take place February 19-24 at the Lugogo Arena.

According to the BWF, Kasirye and all the other Ugandan male players who are lowly ranked by the world body will have to play in the qualifiers to enter the main draw.  Kasirye is ranked 692nd, while Fred Kirabo who is 625 will be the only Ugandan male player to enter the main draw.

According to the entries Italy's Rosario Maddaloni (112th ranked) will be the top seed for the Championship, while Hadia Hosny will be the top seed for the women.

Simon Mugabi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) told URN on Wednesday that the other top players who have entered the event include; Bahaedeen Ahmad Alshannik (Jordan), Azmy Qowimuramadhoni (Azerbaijan), Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori (Nigeria).

“We expect to have a very competitive tournament as we have over 30 male and female foreign players. It will give our local players a good challenge,” he added.

The Championship which will feature the the men's and women's singles and doubles and mixed doubles will have UGX36,5000 million (US$10,000) as cash prize to be shared among the best players.
