The Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria will tonight host the African champions Mamelodi Sundowns against KCCA FC in the first leg of the 2017 CAF Total Africa Champions League.
After ejecting Angola's Premeiro de Agosto in the preliminary round, KCCA FC coach Mike Mutebi says they are determined to prove a point in continental football. “We do not fear Sundowns because they are the champions. We are here to play our kind of football and not to defend,” Mutebi said last night.
Mutebi is urging his squad to continue in the same positive vein they have showed in the League at home where they top the log and are also in the last 16 of the knock out Uganda Cup. “It is very possible to get a good result away from home. But my players should have confidence in their abilities,” he added.
Midfielder Paul Mucureezi is also confident the team can perform well in Pretoria. “We need to play as a team and get the result,” he added. Team captain Denis Okot said facing defending champions really motivates them because they want to prove a point against the South African side. “If they undermine us, they will be shocked,” added the defender.
Former South African based professional Geoffrey Sserunkuma who has netted two goals in the Champions League so far and leads the scorers chart with 12 goals in the League will lead the KCCA FC team, while Mutebi could give chance to other proven and tested veterans Vincent Kayiizi and Robert Ssentongo.
Uganda Cranes first choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango who has been out injured could however miss the game for Sundowns, while returning striker Anthony Laffor is expected to feature in the game.
The other games in the lucrative championship pitting from the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (Cecafa) region will see Tanzania's Young Africans battle Zanaco (Zambia), Rivers United (Nigeria) host El Merreikh (Sudan), AC Leopards (Congo) take on St George (Ethiopia) who have two Ugandan players Yasser Mugerwa and goalkeeper Robert Odonkara. Sudan's El Hilal will also play host to host AS Port Louis (Mauritius).
