The ministry of trade and industry intends to carry out a countrywide exercise of registering all small scale and micro business enterprises.

The move stems from a need by the ministry to setup a directory of all small scale and micro business enterprise in Uganda.

Amelia Kyambadde, the Minister of Trade and Industry explains that the exercise will enable government to get the names and addresses of all people who are involved in small scale enterprises. The minister was on Friday meeting businessmen based in Mbale area at Shine On Hotel in Mbale town.

Kyambadde says the information will help government to also regulate the sector by knowing what activities members of the informal sector are involved in. She adds that the exercise will help small scale dealers get easy accreditation from the Uganda National Bureau of Standards—UNBS for their products.

Kyambadde also says government intends to setup markets at all entry points in the country to boost the activities of small and micro business enterprises. She says the markets will help members of the business community sell their products across borders.

Judith Makabalya, a business woman from Mbale who deals in processing ‘malewa’, a local delicacy, however, says government should not stop at registering them but offer financial support to promote their activities.

She says inadequate funds are a big challenge which limits the operations of small scale and micro business enterprise like hers.
