Traders Count Losses As Fire Guts Market in Mbarara

More than 600 traders in Mbarara City are counting losses after Nyamityobora Market was gutted by fire.

The fire that destroyed stalls and kiosks started on Saturday at 4:30 am. It is alleged that the fire started from one of the stalls in the market and eventually spread to the entire market.  The destroyed items included fresh foods like Irish Potatoes, bunches of Bananas, groceries, fridges, wooden Kiosks, among others.

Wilson Rwankore, Chairperson Nyamityobora Market, says that more than 500 million shillings worth of property was destroyed. He says that by the time fire brigade arrived at the scene all property had been burnt to ashes.

Robert Singura, a trader, says that they are yet to establish the cause of the fire. He says that traders are puzzled how the fire could start at 4:30 am during the curfew hours.

Saidat Rukundo, a trader says that the Police Fire Brigade arrived at the scene at 7:30 am and did not have water.

Samson Kasasira, Rwizi region Police spokesperson, said that they are investigating the cause of the fire.
