Travelers between Kampala and Moroto in Karamoja sub region are in jubilation following the entry into the market of a new transport service provider; BMK Express Transporters, breaking the monopoly previously enjoyed by Gateway Bus Service.

BMK buses, owned by Kampala businessman Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige, leave Moroto at 7am and arrive in Kampala at around 5pm every day and vise versa.  Kibirige said the buses are born out of the realization of enormous transport challenges on the route.

Traveling from Karamoja has been a nightmare over the years mainly due to a poor road network and absence of transport service providers.

Travelers mainly relied on Gateway Buses that leave Moroto at 9pm and reach Kampala at around 7am. Others are often seen using open trucks like tippers and lorries which would sometimes spend more than two days on the road.

But BMK says this will be no more.

Dennis Okori, a businessman in Moroto welcomed the development with reservations saying that although a number of players have in the past shown interest in the route, they are challenged by the poor road network especially during rainy seasons.

Norah Arienyo, a frequent traveler says her first experience with the bus was fast and comforting. “We spent about three hours from Moroto to Soroti - a journey that usually takes over six hours,” Arienyo said.

Moroto Municipal councilor Mary Nachap says the news is relieving to the travelers who have been spending nights on the road whenever traveling to Kampala.
