Asylum seekers at Nyakabande reception centre
A 16-year-old Congolese asylum seeker has died after she was knocked down by a truck at Nyakabande reception centre in Kisoro district.
Lydia Mbakemiye, a resident of Kiwanja in Rutshuru territory, North Kivu province, was on Monday at around midday queuing up at the reception centre for registration and screening, when an ISUZU FVZ truck registration number UAU 728x belonging to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), which was carrying mobile toilets, arrived at the centre.
As the truck entered the reception centre, asylum seekers gave way; however, as Mbakemiye was returning to queue up, the truck knocked her and she died on the spot.
Elly Maate, the Police Spokesperson for Kigezi region, confirms the incident, saying that the deceased's body has been taken to Kisoro hospital mortuary for postmortem as investigations into the matter continue.
The Nyakabande reception centre hosts more than 6000 asylum seekers who flee from North Kivu province due to the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels' insurgency.
