A day after his promotion and retirement from the army, Lieutenant General Henry Tumukunde has been described as a patriotic soldier who is not afraid to air his opinion.

Colonel Shaban Bantariza, the deputy director of the Uganda Media Centre described Tumukunde as a courageous soldier who has served the nation diligently through the army and his retirement was only a matter of time away.

Bantariza said that Tumukunde\'s retirement signaled that the army was ready to retire officers that had asked for retirement.

Tumukunde\'s retirement has been greeted with a lot of speculation especially with the timing in which his retirement application was approved and passed.

A formerly controversial brigadier who criticized the President over lifting term limits, Tumukunde was remanded and tried for 8 years for indiscipline. During his trial, Tumukunde  swore to leave the army and filed his retirement request but it wasn\'t granted until Monday evening.

Bantariza however said the retirement of a senior army officer from the army is not exceptional.

Tumukunde does not hide his hatred for Museveni\'s new political rival Amama Mbabazi whom he accuses of witch hunting him during the 8 years he was on trial.

Tumukunde was quoted making remarks against Mbabazi at a fundraising ceremony of Owino traders where he said that the public shouldn\'t quickly forget the evils that have been visited upon them by ‘an aspiring presidential candidate\'.

A day after making the statement, Mbabazi\'s campaign team updated their facebook pages with a report from parliament clearing Mbabazi of the Temangalo land scandal that Mbabazi had been embroiled in.

Attempts to speak to Tumukunde for a comment were futile as his known number went unanswered.

General David Sejusa who was at more senior rank than Tumkunde had asked to retire from the army but UPDF is yet to allow him to exit the force so that he participates in partisan politics.
