Morris Niyonzima, the officer in charge of Jinja central police station
says that two face charges of trespass and illegal possession of government
property. They were detained during
a harmonization meeting between the squatters and Jinja city authorities
following a demonstration by residents on Wednesday.
Residents rampaged and
demolished illegal structures on the health center land prompting police to
disperse them with teargas. Darius Nandinda, the Jinja
City Resident Commissioner who chaired the harmonization meeting tasked Musoke
and Isadha to explain how they acquired the Walukuba land.
Musoke
told the meeting that he was not willing to reveal his landlord whereas Isadha
confirmed that he illegally settled on the contested land after failing to pay
rent at his former residence. This prompted the RCC to order the duo’s detention.
Nandinda explained
that the Jinja city security committee has resolved to open a general inquiry
file detailing all those implicated for encroaching on the Walukuba health
center land. He explains that the illegal
settlers had occupied part of the land, which was earmarked to host the proposed Busoga
regional cancer treatment unit.
