Two BMU Officers in Buvuma Arrested Over Death of Fisherman

Police in Buvuma district have arrested two Beach Management Units-BMU officers from Ttomo landing site in connection to the death Noah Nabende a fisherman.

The suspects are Deogratius Ssendiwala and Patrick Kizito.

The Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson Hellen Butoto says that the suspects were found in possession of the deceased’s belongings which include fishing gears such as nets hidden in their houses.

Nabende’s was also the head pastor of Jesus’s fire Church at Kitamiro in Buvuma district. His body was discovered at the shoreline of Lake Victoria near another landing site of Ntiro a day after discovering his boat in the same area. 

 “We have seized the BMU boat that was used by the suspects to rotate on water, investigations are still on-going, the suspects also have another criminal record of killing a security guard,” Butoto notes.

 Livingstone Maka a fisherman at Buvuma who accompanied police on the search says that they were suspicious of the BMU officials at Ntiro since it is not the first time to involve themselves in piracy acts.

The Buvuma Deputy Residents District Commissioner Juma Kigongo says that he is against BMU officials carrying out operations on water without permission from the fisheries protection unit. 

“BMU officials are not allowed to carry out any operation unless they requested by FPU, it is the only unit authorised to do operations on Ugandan waters,” Kigongo notes.
