Two Centenary Bank Officials Netted Over UGX20M

Police in Fort Portal are holding two Centenary Bank officials on suspicion of embezzling 20 million shillings from the institution.

Police in Fort Portal are holding two Centenary Bank officials on suspicion of embezzling 20 million shillings from the institution.

 

Lawrence Okello, the Criminal Investigations Officer Fort Portal police station, has identified the suspected officials as Lubowa Michael, a banking officer and Mwebezi Fred an officer attendant.

 

He says the suspects are employees of Centenary Bank Fort Portal branch located on Kyebambe road along Fort Portal-Kasese road.

 

Okello explains that the employees were picked up from their work place on Wednesday afternoon after the bank manager reported to police that they had failed to account for 20m shillings.

 

The acting Bank manager Ronald Kugonza reported the matter to the police after the two men failed to account for 20m shillings they received from a bank client on Tuesday.

 

Okello says that their arrest came after the acting manager Kugonza assessed their books of accounts and found the money was missing.

 

Okello says police are holding the men for questioning.

Their arrest comes just a month after an accountant attached to FINCA Micro Finance Institution was arrested on suspicion of embezzling 38 million shillings from the institution.

 

32 –year- old Samuel Saasa a resident of Kabundaire cell in West division Fort Portal municipality was arrested by police on 24th January 2013 after his employer Fred Musinguzi the regional manager FINCA Uganda reported the matter to police. This was after they carried out an audit exercise and they were shocked to find that 38 million shillings missing.
