Two children died this morning following heavy rains that destroyed their house in Igamba ward in Iganga municipality.

The two children have been identified as eight-year-old, Anita Nakiyemba and her one-year-old brother, Timothy Kiyemba.

The minor’s parents escaped with serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Iganga general hospital.

Harriet Nakayinza, who spoke to URN on her sick bed at Iganga General Hospital that they closed the door hoping to protect their children from hailstorm only for the house to collapse minutes later.

“This morning was characterized with heavy rains. My husband advised me to lock the door, but a strange hailstorm struck forcing the house to collapse on all of us,” she says.

Ssayid Kakerewe, the village chairperson says they could only save adults as the children could not contain the pressure of the falling walls.

Kakerewe says the house had developed deep cracks and wasn’t fit to shelter humans due to endless rains.

Cue out…in eternal peace,”

David Balaba, the Mayor Iganga municipality who paid a courtesy call to the grieving family, says such accidents are a result of poor planning.

“Some of these buildings are not supposed to be here and the technocrats have brought it to our attention, but due to different political views and interests, our colleagues have intentionally frustrated the process of re-planning our town,” he says.

Adding that, “most of these poor structures mushroom overnight, but because some political players are afraid of losing public trust, they second locals with unproved designs to construct substandard structures.”
