Two Councillors Resign in Abim

Olum, who has served as a councillor since 2006 also served as the district Production and Marketing Secretary in the previous council.
Two councillors in Abim district have resigned just weeks after taking the oath of office. They are Jimmy Olum, the LC V councillor of Morulem Town Council and Beatrice Aloyo, the representative of Camkwok Sub County in Abim district.

The two councillors tendered their resignation letters to Abim District Speaker, George Emmanuel Otoke on May 30, 2021. The two decided to step down from political office to join the civil service following their successful recruitment in Abim district.

They are part of 111 staffs recruited to fill up position in various departments including health, education, production and marketing among others. Olum is now an Agricultural officer after being appointed effective June 1, 2021 while Aloyo is waiting for positing instruction as parish chief.

Olum, who has served as a councillor since 2006 also served as the district Production and Marketing secretary in the previous council. According to Olum, he decided to join civil service to serve the community in another capacity.

“I want to inspire the farmers to practice agriculture for market purpose. This can be attained through exchange visits and provision of extension services to farmers,” said Olum in an interview. Aloyo only attended the first council during the election of the speaker. Abim District council speaker, George Emmanuel Otoke confirmed the resignations on Tuesday.

“The 2 councillors have been employed by Abim district Local Government and we shall notify EC to fill the void created by their departure,” said Otoke. Electoral Commission now has to organise a by-election to elect two new councillors.

Joyce Acan, the Abim District Electoral Commission Registrar told URN that she is yet to the councillor’s resignation letter, adding that she will notify the commission headquarters once she receives the information.
