Two held for Assaulting Lira based Journalist

Police are holding two men in connection to an attack on a Luo newsreader at the Lira City-based Voice of Lango FM. The suspects are Godwin Achai and Elvis Omara, both residents of Lira City.

The suspects are said to have attacked Sam Brunos Aliga, a Luo News anchor on Wednesday morning as he made his way into the station for the morning news bulletin.

Martin Oming, a cleaner at the station that it was about 6:44 am when two unidentified people dressed in red clothes parked about 4 meters from Voice of Lango FM premises and intercepted Aliga as he tried to access the station.

According to Oming, he went to remind Aliga that time for news was approaching but the suspect started assaulting Aliga while shouting that “What have you seen in Akena"? as they whisked the newsreader to an unknown destination.

It is unclear whether the attackers were referring to the Jimmy Akena, the Lira Municipality Member of parliament or some other Akena. Richard Ekoto, the Voice of Lango FM Station Manager, says since then Aliga's whereabouts are unknown to management and family.

The North Kyoga Region Police spokesperson, James Ekaju, says they swung into action and picked up Godwin Achai and Elvis Omara to help with police investigations. He, however, says that it is still too early to establish the motive of the attackers.

Patrick Okino, the Chairperson of Lango United Journalist Association-LUJA has condemned the attack as acts of hooliganism and asked police to promptly investigate Aliga’s kidnapping and bring the masterminds to justice.
