Police in Gulu are holding two men who were picked up on Sunday night with two machetes, knives and a toy gun during an operation to crack down on thugs in the district. The suspects are Isaac Odong and Richard Komakech, both residents of Lacor Trading center.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa Region Police spokesperson, says the suspects were picked up at around 2am in the wee hours of this morning. He says in addition to the weapons, the suspects were also found in possession of an old police uniform.

He says since other suspected hit men were picked up from Pece Ring road in Gulu town where they tried to chop off the head of Michael Asio, a resident of Pece vanguard. Okema identifies four of the suspects as Geoffrey Ojok, Morris Okello, Sammy Opiyo, Emmanuel Akena, Moses Ali and Emmanuel Odoch.

“The four were arrested with a panga which they were using to cut Asio's head,” said Okema. He says they have stepped their operations to weed out criminal gangs that have been terrorising residents.

Martin Okoyo, the Gulu District Police Commander, says their operations will extend to lodges and hotels because they have noticed that most of the criminals sleep in lodges during daytime and stay away at night.
