Two men in Bugiri district are in trouble for their alleged involvement in the production and distribution of adulterated cooking oil. Ali Muswayili and Issa Hassan were picked up over the weekend with 700 liters of adulterated cooking oil in containers belonging to Bidco Oil Refineries. According to police a 20 liter jerrycan of adulterated oil costs between 35,000 and 40,000 shillings. The suspects have allegedly been targeting families around the shores and islands of Lake Victoria. Their arrest of the suspects follows complaints filed by residents over the last eight months.

Kiiza says that when he went to hospital doctors told him that he was suffering from food poisoning. Dr. Stephen Senyonjo, Public Health Specialist at Jinja Hospital says that adulterated cooking oil is very harmful for human consumption. He says that the oil contains impurities and substances that are harmful to vital body organs like the liver and Kidney. He says such products are the leading cause of different cancers and should be put off the market. Bhavin Patel, the Head of sales Bidco Uganda limited says that they have received complaints of adulterated oil sold in their containers.

He says their customers say the oil burns out fast and has a strange smell. Godfrey Musimami, the acting Bugiri District Police Commander says the arrest of the suspects brings to 6, the number of people picked up in connection to the distribution of adulterated cooking oil. Musimami explains that they picked up four suspects late last year. He appeals to the general public to join the fight against counterfeit products which are harmful for their health and the economic growth of the country.
