Kassim Okello and Patrick Ojok died on spot while Opio succumbed to the gunshot wounds at Lira Referral Hospital on Saturday.
Police in Lira are holding two suspected masterminds of an ambush on a Bidco company truck on Friday night last week. Three people aboard the truck were shot dead and an unspecified amount of money robbed during the incident at Amach trading center, 12 km along the Lira-Soroti Highway.
The trio was returning from Amolatar district to Lira town aboard a Tata Truck number UAT 635Y. The dead were identified as Kassim Okello, a salesman attached to Bidco Company- Lira office, Patrick Ojok, a police Constable who was guarding the team and accountant Denis Opio.
Kassim Okello and Patrick Ojok died on spot while Opio succumbed to the gunshot wounds at Lira Referral Hospital on Saturday. Now, Lira Police are holding Patrick Wandera and Erick Muziira, both Bidco drivers in connection to the robbery.
Manshur Suwed, the Central North Regional Police spokesperson says the duo is being held at Lira Central Police Station to aid Police investigations into the attack. He says they have confiscated mobile phones from the suspects to ascertain claims of possible syndicate between the suspects and the gunmen.
He says that, before the accountant died he told Police that, their vehicle broke down at Kangai trading center in Dokolo district and they notified their Lira office to send a rescue team. According to Opio, the boss reportedly agreed to send another vehicle to rescue the team and they were expected to meet at Amach trading center, where the attack occurred.
Preliminary Police investigations show that, when the occupants of the truck reached Amach trading center, they met a white Noah registration UAT 262K, which signaled them to stop. No sooner had they parked by the roadside than, the occupants of the Noah vehicle opened fire. After the incident, the gunmen fled into hiding leaving behind the Noah vehicle.
