Two children have died in a house fire at Kiryange landing site along the Lake Albert shores in Buseruka Sub County in Hoima district.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Public Relations Officer, only identifies one of the children as 8-year-old Hope and her 4-year-old sister.

He says the two children were sleeping in a grass thatched house with their 12-year-old brother Robert Mugisa when the fire started at around 2:00am.

Mugisa escaped with severe burns and is currently admitted at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. According to Hakiza, the children's mother only identified as Akello left the children sleeping and went for a mission only known to her.

This is the second fire incident in Hoima claiming lives within a space of one month. Last month, an elderly man was burnt to ashes in Buhanika Sub County when his house caught fire.

The fire is believed to have started from the fire that was lit by the elderly man to warm up himself during a cold night. Hakiza warns residents to be extremely cautious with fire.
