Two medical workers from Friendship Medical Center in Matugga in Wakiso district are in trouble over the suspicious death of a patient placed under their care. They are Patrick Mugwanya, a Clinical Officer and Phionah Nampera, a nurse at the facility.
The duo was picked up on Thursday morning in connection to the death of 32-year-old Ivan Tumukunde, an enrolled nurse. Tumukunde was rushed by his friends to Friendship Medical Center in Matugga on Wednesday even where he was admitted.
However, his lifeless body was found lying at Kaguja in Matuga this morning. This prompted his family and friends to storm Friendship Medical Center to seek an explanation but they were locked out prompting them to pelt the facility with stones.
Residents joined in the chaos and started vandalizing the health facility. It took the intervention of police to disperse the angry residents and calm down the situation and arrest the medical workers.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, says the duo is locked up at Matugga Police Station as investigations into Tumukunde's death are ongoing.
"Police is investigating circumstance under which, Tumukunde died. We have arrested two staffs of the clinic and we are still looking for three others including the owner of the clinic," Owoyesigyire said.
Police have handed over Tumukunde's body to Mulago hospital for postmortem to establish the cause of death. Jane Mwiza, a friend to the deceased told police that Tumukunde wasn't badly off when he was taken to the health center.
She says what made them made suspect foul play was finding his body dumped at Kaguja. "They must have killed him and then dumped his body there," Mwiza said in her police statement.
