Two suspected cattle rustlers were Thursday morning shot dead by the Uganda Peoples\' Defence Forces (UPDF) in Napak district.

The incident happened at Nakayot village, Lotome Sub County, some 60 kilometres South East of Moroto town.

Capt. Denis Omara, the 3rd Division UPDF Public Relations Officer says the suspected rustlers were in a group of four herding two stolen cows with one gun. He adds that the army has recovered the two cows and another four people arrested in connection with the theft.

He identifies those in custody at 403 Brigade headquarters as Lomokol and Akol. Others are Nekyeret Kony and Lotiire Apunoi.

He further says there was heavy exchange of fire as the rustlers resisted before they were overpowered killing two instantly. He is optimistic that the one on the run will be arrested.

So far, animal thefts are on the rise as a prolonged dry spell ravages Karamoja. Hence during the dry season Karimojong take the advantage to steal animals in order to replenish their herds and also fight hunger back at home.
