Police in Lira is holding two people for impersonating as officers of the Uganda Peoples Defense Force-UPDF. The two are identified as Brian Omara, from Abim district and Thomas Angena, from Katakwi district.

They were arrested from Iredha Chambers in Lira town on Tuesday following a tip-off from the community that the two were masquerading as personnel managing Operation Wealth Creation in the Lango Sub-region.

It is reported that Omara, in the company of Angena on June 23, jointly went to Lira Central Police Station to obtain a police letter to allow them to apply for National Identification Cards under the claim that their initial IDs were lost.

Both of them had presented themselves as UPDF officers at the rank of a Lieutenant from the Pader based 5th Division Army headquarters.

Robert Abak, Lira Resident District Commissioner says the duo was subsequently given police letters introducing them to National Identification Registration Authority Office in Lira. But, according to Abak, a quick background check found that the two supposed officers were imposters.

North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong confirmed the arrest saying the suspects shall be handed to the Army for further management. They are still being held at Lira CPS.
