Raphael Mutongo, the Uchumi supermarket Mbale Manager told the workers to stay home pending communication from their head office.
At least 37 employees of Uchumi supermarket in Mbale are stranded following the abrupt closure of the outlet. The workers turned up for work on Tuesday morning only to be told the supermarket has been closed until further notice.
Raphael Mutongo, the Uchumi supermarket Mbale Manager told the workers to stay home pending communication from their head office. Mutongo however assured the workers the closure was temporary.
The manager declined to speak to URN on the closure of the supermarket and instead referred our reporter to their head office in Kampala. The closure of the Uchumi outlet in Mbale followed that of Gulu branch.
Some of the employees who spoke to URN on condition of anonymity for fear of being reprimanded by their superior said although they were not given any explanation on the closure, they heard from their colleagues in Kampala that management closed the supermarket for fear of being raided by Court bailiffs.
They gave management up to the end of this week to explain what is happening or else they petition higher authorities for intervention. On Monday, Court Bailiffs raided Uchumi supermarket at Garden City Shoppers Mall to seize merchandise on the orders of Ugachick Poultry breeders to recover unspecified amount of money.
