The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has applied to host the qualifiers for the 2018 ICC Women Cricket World Cup qualifiers in March.

“We have hosted several big international tournaments before and think we have the capacity to host another big event,” Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) Chief Executive Officer, Justine Ligyalingi told URN on Thursday.

Ligyalingi disclosed that Kenya and Tanzania have also applied to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Africa Cricket body to host the event.

He explained that besides being a World Cup qualifier, the tournament will also be Africa\'s Women\'s Twenty20 Championship. Six nations Kenya, Uganda, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and South Africa will take part in the event.

The UCA official also disclosed that the national women\'s team already started training under coaches Jonathan Ssebanja and Grace Mutagubya.

Uganda failed to qualify for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 World Cup to take place in  India from March 8 to April 3. The tournament was first held in 2009, when hosts England won the tournament. The most recent champions are Australia, who won the tournament and retained the trophy in 2014.
