Coach Kim Poulsen’s team that won the 2011 trophy were better in penalty kicks as they won 3-2 after the game had tied 2-2 in 90 minutes at the Mombasa Stadium.
It was a painful ending for the Cranes who had won all their three games in the Group stages, but fell to 10-man Tanzania who had Salum Abubaakar sent-off early in the 52nd minute.
Daniel Sserunkuma and defender Martin Mpuga scored for the Cranes, while Mrisho Ngasa picked a brace for Tanzania.
During the penalty kicks, Tanzania’s goalkeeper Ivo Philip Mapunda was the hero as he saved Sserunkuma’s last penalty kick, while Cranes defender Godfrey Walusimbi had also placed his out.
Ramadhan Kiemba, Athuman Idd and skipper Patrick Kelvin Yondani converted for the Kilimanjaro Stars, while Cranes goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan who had a bad day saved star player Samata Mbwana Ally’s kick.
A disappointed Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic said after the game that his boys had fought back strongly to get back into the game, but were unlucky in penalty kicks.
In the second game hosts Kenya were still battling Rwanda in the second quarter final tie. Tomorrow Zambia will face Burundi, while Ethiopia takes on Sudan in the other quarter final games.
