Uganda Cubs have been drawn to face giants and two time champions Nigeria in the 2019 Total U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In the draws conducted on Thursday night at the Mlimani City Conference Centre in Dar es Salaam, Nigeria were placed in Group A alongside Tanzania, Angola and Uganda.

Eng. Moses Magogo, the Uganda FA President who represented President of the Confederation of African Football as the chief guest said he was happy that the tournament comes to Tanzania for the first time.

“As a region we are happy that a tournament for the youngsters is coming to the region and we must make sure we perform,” Magogo told URN.

He said pitting Uganda against Tanzania makes the group very difficult because the two sides faced off in the qualifiers. Uganda Cubs beat the Tanzania team in the semi finals before winning the CECAFA U-17 Championship which were also qualifiers for 2019 U-17 AFCON.

Assisted by captain of the Tanzania U-20 team, Michael Morice, and former Taifa Stars player Mohamed Adolf Richard the draws also saw Group B pit 2003 champions Cameroon against Guinea, Senegal and Morocco.

The final tournament will be held from 14-28 April 2019 in Tanzania with the semi-finalists qualifying to represent the continent at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru next year.

The Serengeti Boys captain Morice said although they know it will be a tough hurdle, they are ready to prove a point. “We believe in ourselves. Facing Uganda again will be a difficult task, but we are preparing well,” added the skipper.

Group A – Tanzania, Nigeria, Angola, Uganda

Group B – Guinea, Cameroon, Morocco, Senegal
