The Uganda Cubs have qualified for the 2019 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Coach Peter Onen's team defeated Ethiopia 3-1 in the final of the qualifiers for the Central East Zone played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Sunday.
Samson Kasozi nodded in Uganda Cubs' first goal after 15 minutes before Abdul Wahad Iddi made it 2-0 after 62 minutes. Iddi showed huger for more goals when he netted his second of the day after 86 minutes.Wondimagegn Bunaro netted a late penalty for the Ethiopian team.
“I am happy the boys followed instructions and won the title. I promised that we shall revenge against Ethiopia because they beat us in the opening game 1-0,” Onen told URN.
Moses Magogo, the FUFA President told the team after dinner at the Seascape Hotel that they will provide all that is needed to prepare the team so that they qualify for the 2019 World Cup in Peru.
“We are giving you a small token when you arrive in Uganda tomorrow Morning,” added Magogo flanked by his Vice President Justus Mugisha.
Before the competition started CAF disqualified 11 overage players after separate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tests were carried out. Uganda and Kenya had three players each disqualified.
The 2019 AFCON U-17 will take place May 12-26th in Tanzania. The top four teams at the 2019 tournament will qualify for FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru next year.
