Uganda Stops Ethiopia in 2020 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Qualifier

Uganda has defeated Ethiopia 2-0 in it's first leg World Cup qualifier match.

Uganda has defeated Ethiopia 2-0 in the first leg of the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup qualifier.

The home side scored through skipper Juliet Nalukenge in the 4th minute and Catherine Nagadya after 85 minutes at the Star Times Stadium, Lugogo on Saturday.

Head Coach, Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi described the match as tough because the team's defence and attack skills were wanting.

He says that they surprised by the performance of the Ethiopian team. The coach however lauded the team for trying their best to keep in the lead and also converting the balls into goals despite missing several chances.

The Ethiopian head coach, Samuel Ewunetu Gebrekirstos also lauded his team for putting up a spirited fight despite losing the first leg. 

Through his translator, Diamond Almaz, Abera said that the Ugandan team won the 2019 CECAFA U-17 women's tournament and therefore have more experience than his team. 

He also says the Ethiopian team only had training for two weeks.

He added that his team failed to score goals despite having more ball possession through out the match.

Uganda will now head to Addis Ababa to battle in the return leg. The winner between Uganda and Ethiopia will face the winner between Tanzania and Burundi in the second round.

India will host the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup from November 2nd-24th, 2020.
