Uganda to Send Teams for EAC Games In Burundi

Uganda has confirmed participation in the inaugural 2018 East Africa Community Games slated to take place August 16-30th in Burundi.

Lamex Omara Apita, the commissioner in-charge of physical Education in the Ministry of Education and Sports confirmed to URN on Friday that money has been allocated for the event and Uganda has now entered the Games.

“These are the first Games that are meant to bring us together in the region and we decided not to miss them,” explained Apita.

The Games under the theme ‘Fostering East African Community integration and Peace through sports' will take place in Bujumbura, Ngozi and Gitega.

Uganda is expected field athletes in track and field events, rugby, Netball, Volleyball and Handball among others.

The Head, Corporate Communication and Public Affairs at the East African Community (EAC), Richard Owora Othieno says preparations are in high gear and the hosts are ready to stage a successful event.

The Games will attract the six partner states; Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and South Sudan.

The regional sports initiative emanated from the decision of the 20th EAC Council of Ministers, which directed the Secretariat to organize Sports tournaments on regular basis with partnership of private sector, civil society, voluntary organizations/ institutions/individuals and development partners.
