Recycling is seen as a solution to plastic menace and is used widely in some countries, but in Uganda, the progress to embrace it is slow.

Currently, recycling is only done on large scale by private entrepreneurs who focus more on accruing profits.

Apart from being an eyesore, Uganda plastic waste is commonly discarded and ends up among household garbage heaps where at times it is burned, thus emitting  fumes that are harmful to the environment.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Executive Director Tom Okurut says that in order to match the rate at which plastic products are used and manufactured, recycling is more critical in Uganda.

Okurut added that though there is a law to enforce the disposal and distribution of plastic waste, the authority has faced resistance from the business community on several occasions, but this is bound to change soon.

Winnie Nabulya, an Administrator at the Plastic Recycling Industry: a division of Rwenzori Water Company, told URN that the plant receives plastics from the local populace.

She explained that plastic waste is sorted at the plant and taken through a production process where it is cut into flakes, packaged and sold locally or exported.

Nabulya says recycling is both an environment conservation initiative, as well as economically viable to Ugandans.

Joseph Kyeyune, a student at the Royal Institute, says he gets close to half a million UGX collecting plastic waste, which he uses to pay for his tuition.

Recently the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) also passed a bill is intended to control the use of polythene bags while advocating for the total ban of plastics.
