Uganda's athletes and officials traveling to the opening ceremony
The 2024 Paris Olympic Games have officially begun with a
groundbreaking opening ceremony held in the heart of the French capital.
The
games will run from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
For the first time in Olympic Summer Games history, the
opening ceremony took place outside a traditional stadium.
Athletes floated on
boats along the Seine, Paris' main waterway, instead of marching on an
athletics track.
Ugandan athletes Charles Kagimu and swimmer Gloria
Muzito, who were earlier named the flag bearers, proudly carried their nation's
flag as Uganda's delegation traveled down the Seine.
Thousands of spectators
lined the riverbanks to watch the spectacular event.
Uganda will be represented by 25 athletes competing in
four disciplines: track/marathon, swimming, cycling, and rowing.
The athletics team,
consisting of sprinters, middle-distance runners, long-distance runners, and
marathoners, forms the bulk of the squad with 21 athletes.
Swimming, rowing,
and cycling are represented by two, one, and one athlete respectively.
