The Uganda National Roads Authority- UNRA has started replacing broken guard rails at Kagano hills along the Kabale- Kisoro road.

Kagano in Kanaba sub-county, Kisoro district is an accident- prone spot due to its steepness. Last month, three members of the same family sustained serious injuries.

They were travelling in a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin registration number UAK 705X heading to Kisoro when the vehicle they were travelling in lost control and rolled down the hill.

In the same month, Hillary Namanya, the Programs Manager of Rukundo International, a Local Non-Government Organization in Kabale and his wife, Barbra Natukunda died after their vehicle, a Toyota Mark II registration number UAG 044 M failed to negotiate the corner and swerved off the road before rolling several times.

Last year, a lorry Isuzu Elf Registration Number UAW 739M, that was carrying traders failed to negotiate the corner and hit the guard rails on the road.

Despite being a black spot, UNRA had not bothered to put up measures of reducing on risks making it easy for vehicles to roll down the hill since there were no barriers.

On Thursday, UNRA workers were seen replacing the guard  rails.  Engineer Augustine Kabanda, UNRA manager in-charge of Kabale station says that the damaged guard rails will be replaced with stronger ones as a long term measure of controlling accidents.

Abel Bizimana, Kisoro LCV Chairperson, says that UNRA should also replace all the damaged guard rails along the Kabale-Kisoro road.  He also accuses UNRA of failing to erect road signs to guide motorists who are using the road for the first time.
