UPC Issues 7-Day Ultimatum for Release of Arua Suspects

The UPC chairperson in Bugisu region Kasolo Mike region and Abas Wetaka the Chairperson for Mbale district are demanding for immediate and unconditional release for the suspects. Wetaka says that the events that happened in Arua before and after the elections are driving the country into a state of anarchy.

Members of the Uganda People's Congress in Mbale DISTRICT have issued a 7-day ultimatum for the release of all opposition leaders and supporters arrested in Arua early this week. They warn that their continued detention beyond the ultimatum will lead to massive protests.

The detained politicians include Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake, Ntungamo Municipality MP Gerald Karuhanga, and Jinja East MP Paul Mwiru, as well as former Makindye East MP. The others are former Makindye East MP Mike Mabikke and the Arua Municipality MP-elect, Kassiano Wadri.

These, together with 34 opposition supporters, were picked up on Monday for allegedly obstructing the president's motorcade and pelting stones that shattered the windscreen of one of the vehicles in the convoy

The suspects appeared before Gulu magistrate's court on Thursday where they were charged with treason and remanded to Gulu prison until August 30. But Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi was separately charged with illegal possession of firearms before the General Court Martial and remanded to Makindye Military Barracks in Kampala.

He said that by holding opposition supporters and subjecting them to torture, President Museveni has contradicted his rhetoric of promoting peace and rule of law.

Kasolo called upon the government to release the MPs and their supporters who were arrested both in Arua and other parts of the country like Kamwokya in Kampala adding that the trial of Kyagulanyi, in the General Court Martial constitutes an illegality.
