The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have reassured communities in the land conflict areas of Kasese District of their commitment to ensuring total security. However, the UPDF has called on the government to urgently address the ongoing land disputes in the district, emphasizing that these conflicts are fueling insecurity and hindering overall development.
For decades, Kasese has witnessed land conflicts, particularly between cultivators and pastoralists in areas such as Nkoko and Kitswamba sub-county, as well as Kabukero in Karusandara sub-county. Last week, police arrested 20 individuals for allegedly inciting violence after they confronted pastoralists in Kabukero village. The group accused the pastoralists of occupying their land.
Col. Saulo Nabimanya, the 222 Mountain Brigade Commander said some of the
prevailing issues concerning land were complex and therefore required urgent government
attention. Nabimnya, whoe was
speaking during Tarehe Sita belated celebrations in Kasese district,
Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council on Sunday asked political leaders to seek
for solutions other than utilizing these differences for political gains.

Nabimanya also asked the local community to promote peace and harmony noting that security must be a shared responsibility between security organs and the common Ugandan.

In his message, the state
minister for ICT and National guidance Godfrey Kabyanga said it was unfortunate
that some people in the district think they can obtain land by use of violence.
He noted that cabinet has previously
discussed the land matters in Kasese and there will be another extra ordinary
sitting mid-this week to find a way forward.
