UPDF Calls for Calm as Congolese Gunmen Attack Kisoro

 Unidentified gunmen from the Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC have raided a village in Kisoro District. The incident occurred in the wee hours of this morning at Bunyangalo Village in Nyabwishenya Sub County, along the Uganda–DRC Boarder. According to preliminary information, the gunmen raided the village while targeting five pharmacies in the area.

The gunmen were repulsed by a team of UPDF officers on patrol. Major Ronald Kakurungu, the UPDF 2nd division spokesperson says the army engaged the gunmen in a fierce gunfire exchange forcing them to retreat into DRC.  Major Kakurungu says a UPDF solider was hit in the thigh in the gunfire exchange and is admitted Kisoro Hospital. He however, says the soldier is not in danger.

Major Kakurungu appeals for calm from residents saying UPDF has launched investigations to establish the people behind the attack. He says they cannot make any conclusion since there are several armed groups operating in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to Major Kakurungu, UPDF is on high alert to avert any fresh attacks by the gunmen who would like disrupt the prevailing peace.
