Business grounded to a halt in Moroto town on Monday night as hundreds of residents rushed to see the body of a warrior killed by the army. Narwosi bypass was flooded with people from all corners of Moroto town who rushed to see one of the men believed to have been part of warriors stealing and killing residents of recent.

Residents poured into the area from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm to view the body that was under heavy UPDF and police protection. Both the local authorities and residents identified the deceased as Lomakou, a resident of Nasinyonoit village in Nadunget Sub County just a few kilometres from Moroto town.

The man in his 20s was shot dead along Nawrosi road near Katanga while another warrior escaped with gunshot wounds and is receiving treatment at Moroto Regional Referral hospital under tight police security. The suspected warrior who was dressed in the traditional sheet worn by Karamojong, tire sandals and green T-shirt and armed with a bow and arrows was shot dead around 2:00 pm while raiding cattle in Kakoliye in Moroto Town. Security sources say the warriors were four in number but two armed with one gun managed to take off.

There has been a spate of killings and cattle thefts recently mostly in south Karamoja attracting heightened security and local vigilance. Halima Pedo, the Kakoliye councillor, says that the community should continue being on high alert for any form of insecurity to the local leaders.

"They tried breaking into some shops in Katanga and they were heard. With the UPDF on alert, they will be dealt with. This is how the community should approach this problem. It’s us against warriors,” she said. Police and military sources said they have clues leading to the group of the deceased warrior.

Norbert Loum Okumu, a security officer at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, says that the injured was rushed to the hospital around 3 pm with gunshot wounds on the back and shoulder. “We have a patient with injuries on back and shoulder in the Emergency ward. He is receiving treatment and there is police deployment here," said Okumu.

A resident of Kakoliye working with a local CBO says that Lomakou was a conservative warrior and has been unwilling to change to other means of livelihood rather than raiding.
