Posiano Mugyenyi, an independent candidate for Isingiro North Parliamentary seat is accusing the army of meddling in his political campaigns. Mugyenyi alleges that senior UPDF officers from the second division are involved in harassing his supporters.

He particularly singles out Col. Emmanuel Rwasahande the 2nd division Operations and Training officer for assaulting one of his supporters John Timbyetaho, in Rukuuba Masha Sub County. Mugyenyi says that Rwasahande committed the offense on January 15, while traveling in an army truck of registration numbers D02F-075.

He also alleges his other supporter; Jackson Byamugisha was shot in the thighs last week by unknown UPDF officers and is nursing gun shot wounds at Mbarara Referral hospital. While addressing journalists in Isingiro last evening, Mugyenyi threatened to petition the Electoral Commission and UPDF high command over the continued harassment of his supporters.

Capt. Robert Kamara, the UPDF second Division spokesman says that the army is still investigating reports of some of their officers accused of harassing civilians. He says that last week, the army together with police dispatched a team of investigators to trace for captain Barigye who was threatening violence.

Kamara says that Barigye is still at large but vows that the army will not tolerate errant officers to dent the image of UPDF. He says that the UPDF code clearly bars serving army officers from participating in active politics. Mugyenyi is contesting against Bright Kanyontore Rwamirama, the state minister for Agriculture who once served in the UPDF.
